Yeovil MP Marcus Fysh has welcomed the news that Yeovil Police Station is to remain open following refurbishment to keep a strong Police presence in the town centre. The future of the site had been uncertain for some time, with Marcus first raising the issue in the House of Commons at the start of 2016 and helping run a petition on the issue at that time which demonstrated considerable opposition to the proposed closure.
He adds, ‘Credit to PCC Sue Mountstevens who has made a good decision for Yeovil here. I know from discussions with our local Police Officers including during my visit in October, that they are in favour of keeping the station too. Other options have been thoroughly explored, I have been involved in looking at other potential ways of maximising our resources, but in the end this is the best way forward and one that I know will be very popular amongst local residents. The Response and Neighbourhood Teams will remain onsite which is clearly good news for our town centre.
With a period of uncertainty now over, I will keep working in Westminster to support our Police, and in particular I am pressing for a review of the Police funding formula to get us a better deal in Somerset and also ways a helping with capital expenditure.’
