I am supporting Liz Truss to be the next Prime Minister. There are many great talents and friends
standing to be the next Conservatives’ Leader but for me the one who is experienced, tough,
practical, has the right economic plan, will sort the NI Protocol and make the most of independence
from the EU, unite the party and take us forward is Liz.
Given the challenges we face as a county now I would have preferred not to have the focus on a
leadership election. However, the good news is that it will happen quickly. The list of candidates is
also something which reflects the modern Conservative Party and of which we should be very proud.
It must be the most diverse and inclusive list of candidates we have ever seen. Women and leaders
from all sorts of racial backgrounds make up the majority of the list and, whilst they may talk the talk
on that, it is something you rarely see from other political parties. It is also very encouraging that we
have candidates with experience of running Government Departments as well as some fresh faces.
Liz Truss has experience and has had success in a number of Government Departments and that’s
helpful for any Prime Minister. I worked with her at the Department for International Trade, largely
to support our own Somerset food and drink products, and she had the determination and vision to
get things done. She understands the benefits of free trade deals and knows how they can help so
many of our producers in the South West, given the right support. This will be hugely important in
cutting red tape and taking advantage of our situation post-Brexit. Liz also has a great understanding
of the Northern Ireland Protocol and what needs to change there. This is one of the most urgent
issues facing the Government right now and needs strong and detailed management.
Over the last few days I have had fifty minute interviews with each of the candidates and for me the
stand-out choice and the one who answered with detail, poise and assurance, and every bit as if she
were the Prime Minister already, was Liz Truss.
In more local news I am keen to hear from people whether the trial of local speed cameras seemed
to have much of an impact. I will be following up with the Police as well but if you are concerned
about people racing along where you live do get in touch and perhaps we can get another round of
temporary speed cameras set up.
Somerset Food Trail starts on 15th July and runs until 24th. Details can be found at
somersetfoodtrail.org. I think it’s great that we are encouraging understanding of farming and local
produce and it looks like a lot of fun too. Also the weather is looking fantastic for Burnworthy House
summer fayre on Saturday in South Petherton. Live music and lots more to enjoy there. Do
remember the sun cream though and to drink plenty of water.
