The District Councils’ poll on Local Government reorganisation descended into further chaos this week. The information they sent to voters across Somerset gave the wrong web address for information about the One Somerset proposal. In fact the address given led to a spoof and offensive website. The origins of that website are being investigated and the results of that will be interesting but if you would like to read about the One Somerset proposal for better, more efficient and coordinated services across the County do visit onesomerset.org.uk.
In more positive news, over the weekend we hit another huge milestone in our battle against the coronavirus as we passed 60 million vaccine doses administered, with over 38 million people now having received at least one jab. In light of the sustained success of our vaccine programme I will continue to lobby the Government for the releasing of all domestic restrictions on 21 June. Having heard from many parents recently, and of course being one myself, I am very keen to see complete normality return to school without delay. Test sporting events have gone well and I can’t wait to see our grounds full of fans again.
Throughout the pandemic I have been constantly lobbying for further support for our young people so I am pleased the Government has announced a new £51 million funding boost to help thousands of vulnerable young people in the care system. The support package will fund a range of schemes to support those that are either in or leaving care, as well as proposals to introduce national standards that accommodation setting for 16- and 17-year-olds would have to meet.
A few people locally have relayed concerns about the free trade negotiations with Australia. I know that some of our farmers have issues; I was in a meeting recently with the NFU President to discuss these. However, with a managed transition such a deal can open up great opportunities for the farming industry and many others. As we enter into these deals we can set terms about standards, including on animal welfare, but actually in the vast majority of cases those in Australia are very similar to our own and certainly higher than many within the EU. We are in the early stages of discussing a deal with India and the export potential there could be absolutely massive.
Finally, the Royal family continues to be in the headlines more than I suspect they would like and I tend to think it is a shame when anything detracts from the incredible lifetime of service the Queen has given this country. However, as more information has gradually emerged regarding the events that led to Martin Bashir’s interview with Princess Diana, I hope the BBC will investigate shortcomings here with the same enthusiasm that they tend to point them out in others as this represents another knock to its reputation.
As always, if you would like to get in touch or if I can help with a local issue please do email marcus.fysh.mp@parliament.uk or call 01935314321.
