The Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan set out stringent targets to protect people and the environment, backed up by up to £56 billion capital investment – the largest in water company history. The government announced on Tuesday that these targets will be enshrined in law through the Environment Act.
Lib Dems including Ed Davey refused to back a Labour motion for targets for the reduction of sewage dumping, fines to be enforced and for environmental assessments. All Lib Dem MPs abstained on the motion despite their calling for tougher measures on the issue.
